Who Wants to Waste a Million?

September 2006 saw the launch of the Safety Camera Scheme’s new campaign entitled Who Wants to Waste a Million? The campaign, which is supported by an informative leaflet and interactive online game, focuses on the cost to society (including emergency services, NHS and police investigation time costs) each time a speeding related collision takes place. The aim of the campaign is to highlight the wider consequences of speeding related collisions and the strain this can have on society as a whole.
The theme of the leaflet is a play on ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?’ with the strap line being Who Wants to Waste a Million - the paradox being that society pays out over 1 million pounds each time someone is killed or seriously injured - no one is a winner.
A spokesperson of the Safety Camera Scheme said:
“Many road safety and anti-speeding campaigns tend to focus on the life destroying or personal loss consequences of not driving carefully. Although the scheme takes these elements extremely seriously, we felt it was time to get the public to think about the wider consequence of speeding - the massive financial burden society incurs each time a collision takes pace. Just think what £1 million could buy society - better education, more nurses and more police officers.”
The information leaflets are available to the public free - click here to order. The interactive game is available free on the Speed Or Safety site.
